Skin Deep Series (Part 1 of 2): What’s Really Aging Your Skin? The Truth About UVA, UVB & HEV

Posted in: Education, Product Education, Skin Care, Tips, Uncategorized

Skin Deep: What’s Really Going On Beneath the Surface?

Let’s talk skin, not just the glow you see in the mirror, but the real MVP layers doing the hard work underneath. Think of your skin like a 3-tier security system for your body. Each layer plays a big role in keeping you protected, hydrated, and looking fresh.

Layer 1: The Top Layer (aka the Epidermis)

This is your first line of defense. It’s the part you see, feel, and slather with your favorite moisturizer. It protects your body from the outside world and yep, it’s where sunburns make their dramatic appearance, thanks to UVB rays.

Layer 2: The Middle Layer (aka the Dermis)

Below the surface, this layer is where the magic lives: collagen, elastin, and all the structure that keeps your skin firm and youthful. Unfortunately, this is also where UVA rays sneak in to cause wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging. Rude, right?

Layer 3: The Deepest Layer (aka the Subcutaneous Tissue)

This is your built-in cushion, made up mostly of fat and connective tissue. It helps regulate body temperature and absorbs shock (kind of like a cozy mattress for your organs). While it’s not the first target of sunlight, it depends on the layers above to stay safe and healthy.

Let’s Talk Light: UVA, UVB & That Sneaky HEV

Before we dive into the types of rays affecting your skin, here’s a quick science moment: The electromagnetic spectrum is made up of both visible and invisible light. While only a small part of this spectrum is visible to the human eye and even some of that is beneficial, both ends of the spectrum carry harmful rays. This includes ultraviolet (UV) light on one end and high-energy visible (HEV) or blue light on the other.

In short? Not all light is your friend, especially when it comes to your skin.

Let’s break down the three main types of light you should know about:

UVB – The Burning Ray

UVB rays are more direct and don’t go as deep, but they’re the ones responsible for sunburns. And more importantly, they’re the major player in most types of skin cancer. UVB rays love sunny days, but they can still do damage even when it’s overcast.

UVA – The Aging Ray

UVA rays are around all year long, and they’re stealthy! They can pass right through clouds and windows. These rays dive deep into your dermis, breaking down collagen and causing premature aging. Think: fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of bounce.

HEV (Blue Light) – The Digital Damage Ray

Here’s the plot twist: HEV light comes from your screens, e.g. phones, tablets, laptops, even LED lights. It may not burn your skin, but it penetrates deep enough to cause oxidative stress, pigmentation, and signs of early aging. If you’re glued to a screen (who isn’t?), this one’s worth protecting against.

So What’s the Solution?

A broad-spectrum sunscreen is your skin’s superhero, it shields against UVA, UVB, and sometimes even HEV. Use it every day, not just at the beach. Your future face will thank you.

Looking for powerful yet lightweight protection against sun and screen damage? Amway’s Artistry Skin Nutrition™ Multi-Defense UV Protect Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ is a must-try. It shields your skin from harmful UVA, UVB, and HEV (blue light) while blending seamlessly into your routine. It’s perfect for daily defense with a touch of luxury.

How It Works

  • Carnosine peptide neutralizes oxidative stress triggered by HEV exposure, helping prevent discoloration and degrade collagen breakdown.
  • Meanwhile, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide handle the heavy-duty job of blocking harmful UVA and UVB rays, making this a truly full-spectrum defense .
